Operationally, you will set priorities, direct, and deliver organizational outcomes by collaborating with others and making tough business decisions to align tactics for strategy implementation while ensuring organizational health and success.

Reporting directly to the Head of Financial Reporting and Corporate Controller, this leader is directly accountable for connecting organizational and departmental strategy to meaningful work for the team, and by delivering the outcomes and results required of a modern Credit Union. This position is accountable for overseeing accurate and timely recording and reporting of all aspects of accounting operations.
What you’ll be doing:
Accounting Operations Leadership
- Collaborate closely with the leaders of Financial Reporting, Tax, Projects and Systems Accounting, and Lease Accounting to ensure a strong cross functional team within the Financial Reporting department.
- Oversight of all accounting operations activities and processes including the key areas of accounts payable, accounts receivable, cards and payments, fixed assets, payroll, and general accounting.
- Lead and develop the Accounting Operations team with the goal of continuing to modernize the functions to improve efficiency, scalability, accuracy, and timeliness.
- Establish team priorities and ensure delivery of departmental objectives and organizational outcomes.
Financial Reporting & Close Processes
- Accountable for the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Ensure compliance with department and corporate policies, the Credit Union Act, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and other applicable legislation.
- Responsible for the financial close process including leading preclose meetings, ensuring completeness of the fiscal period results, and performing the period close process withing the ERP.
- Provide guidance to business leaders on the accounting treatment of strategic projects.
Functional Oversight
- Oversee accounting operations relating to the following functions for the credit union and several subsidiaries:
- Expected credit loss accounting
- MasterCard payments, processes, settlements, and points liability
- Current account (bank account reconciliation)
- Fixed assets and lease accounting
- Foreclosed assets
- Payroll accounting
- Banking system accounting
- Loan programs, including administration fees, reporting, and related audits
- Accounts payable
- Accounts receivable
Internal Controls & Governance
- Promote strong financial governance and adherence to internal controls over financial reporting (ICOFR) following the COSO framework.
- Lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of accounting policies, procedures, controls, and process documentation.
- Identify and mitigate operational and financial reporting risks.
Continuous Improvement & Transformation
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on automation, process optimization, and operational effectiveness.
- Support and lead system enhancements, implementations, and process redesign initiatives impacting Accounting Operations.
- Evaluate emerging industry practices and recommend enhancements to strengthen operations and controls.
Stakeholder Partnership & Audit Support
- Partner collaboratively with Finance leadership, operational leaders, Internal Audit, Risk, Compliance, and external auditors.
- Provide leadership and support for audit activities, including resolution of findings and implementation of recommendations.
- Support enterprise initiatives and organizational objectives through effective financial operations leadership.
People Leadership
- Build, lead, and develop a high-performing and engaged team.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous learning, and operational excellence.
- Coach and develop employees through performance management, succession planning, and ongoing development opportunities.
- Ensure that the team maintains strong technical accounting skills by being well versed in emerging trends, evolving accounting standards, and changes to relevant legislation.
What you bring:
Experience and Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, B. Comm or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of IFRS and the Credit Union Act.
- Experience in preparing financial statements in accordance with IFRS.
- 7+ years of progressively senior positions in accounting within a financial institution.
- 3+ years of people leadership experience with a focus on developing high-performing teams, cultivating a culture of excellence and achieving operational efficiency.
Licenses and Certifications:
Active Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or equivalent.
Other Role Requirements:
- Work arrangement: Remote first
- Weekend or shift work, available to travel, etc.
- The business may from time to time ask for branch and/or department support for special projects and/or areas experiencing staff shortages. All employees may be asked to volunteer to assist in areas of need during these times. These assignments could result in a change of hours, location, and/or travel.
