FINANCIAL ACCOUNTANT, FINANCIAL SERVICES

Full-Time 6-Month Contract

Position Summary

The Financial Accountant contributes to a variety of accounting functions: Management and Financial Reporting, General Accounting, Tax Compliance, Employer Billing and Receivables Management, Treasury and Cash Management, Financial Planning and Analysis, and Financial Processes and Internal Controls. The work of the Financial Accountant supports the decision makers throughout ASEBP by ensuring they are provided with timely, accurate, and relevant financial reporting and analysis used to support their decisions. To enable reliability of the information provided to decision makers, Financial Accountants also ensure the integrity of the underlying journal entry inputs and reports. Financial Accountants work to ensure compliance with external accounting standards and tax requirements and promote the ongoing sustainability of ASEBP through their treasury and cash management, and financial planning activities.

Your Key Responsibilities

Financial Accountants at ASEBP may work within the following areas of responsibility:

Management and Financial Reporting

Support the preparation of management reporting, including conducting variance analysis. Prepare ad hoc requests for financial information and analysis to support decision making. Support the preparation of annual external financial statements and notes that are compliant with accounting standards (Canadian Accounting Standards for Pension Plans, IFRS). Create customized reports within accounting software to support financial analysis and reporting.

General Accounting

Prepare complex period end journal entries, working papers, and reconciliations. Review journal entries and underlying support. Research and ensure accounting for new transactions is compliant with applicable accounting standards.

Tax Compliance

Prepare materials for tax filings, and coordinate with external tax advisors for completion. Work with tax advisors on ad hoc tax compliance matters as they arise.

Employer Billing and Receivables Management

Monitor employer accounts receivable balances and act on unpaid amounts. Respond to employer questions on billing processes and invoices. Update the billing system to reflect premium rate changes, and support annual rate notifications. Analyze and test billing impacts of process changes, and troubleshoot billing integration issues.

Treasury and Cash Management

Monitor and forecast cash balances to ensure going cash needs of ASEBP are met. Support the actioning of cash call requests and distribution notifications from fund managers. Support portfolio rebalancing to ensure compliance with the Statement of Investment Policy. Coordinate banking activities and handle day to day issue resolution with financial institutions.

Financial Planning and Analysis

Analyze budget to actual variances. Support leadership in creation and monitoring of budgets, and forecasting. Support preparation of the consolidated budget.

Financial Processes and Internal Controls

Identify financial control weaknesses, recommend and implement financial controls, and diligently execute key financial controls. Maintain and update documentation on financial procedures and processes. Recommend and implement changes to financial processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Assigned Initiatives and Projects

Annual completion of assigned initiatives in area of work focus to drive innovation and improvements within department. This may include leading projects within the department. Participate in organizational committees and projects as representatives of Finance.

Your Education And Experience

Completion of a university degree and a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. Three to five years of related experience.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Your Abilities

Strong foundation of knowledge in principles and practices of accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and financial processes. Strong foundation of technical skills related to financial statement preparation, supporting working paper preparation, and year-end audit file preparation. Experience with reporting under ASPP and IFRS. Demonstrated experience in identifying process improvements and developing, recommending, and implementing solutions. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with peers, leaders and other staff within an organization. Strong foundation of experience in working within financial systems, and ability to learn new software applications. Intermediate to advanced level of expertise in Microsoft Excel as an analytical tool. Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, for a variety of audiences. Strong time management and organization skills. Benefits and/or insurance experience considered an asset. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central considered an asset. Experience in public practice is considered an asset.
