About the role

Our client, a leading Canadian retail organization, is seeking an experienced Senior Manager, Commodity Tax (Real Estate Focus) to join their team in Downtown Toronto, ON or Brampton, ON. This is a hybrid role requiring 4 days in-office and 1 day remote.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Commodity Taxes, this is a high-impact, strategic role responsible for providing expert-level indirect tax support across complex real estate transactions and multiple corporate entities. This position offers significant autonomy, exposure to senior leadership, and the opportunity to influence key business decisions. There is strong potential for advancement into a Director-level role within approximately two years, based on performance and business needs.

Compensation & Benefits Permanent Role Base Salary: $110,000 – $140,000 Bonus eligibility (to be confirmed) 3 weeks vacation (flexibility may be considered for strong candidates) RRSP matching (under review) Hybrid work model: 4 days in-office, 1 day remote Excellent long-term career growth with a clear path toward a Director-level opportunity Key Responsibilities Lead indirect tax compliance (GST/HST/QST/PST) for multiple corporate entities within a complex real estate structure. Oversee and review the preparation and filing of commodity tax returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Canadian tax legislation. Provide strategic tax guidance on real estate transactions, including acquisitions, dispositions, and organizational structuring. Analyze and apply tax elections, including Joint Venture and Section 167 elections, related to real estate activities. Act as the primary contact for CRA and provincial tax audits, coordinating responses and supporting documentation. Provide indirect tax guidance to internal stakeholders across the business as required. Review financial systems, reporting processes, and internal controls to ensure appropriate tax treatment and compliance. Partner with Finance, Legal, and Operations to identify tax risks and support key business initiatives. Drive continuous improvements to tax reporting processes, compliance, and internal controls. Serve as the subject matter expert for commodity tax while operating with a high degree of independence. Qualifications 5+ years of progressive commodity tax experience, with a strong focus on real estate-related indirect tax matters (required). Strong knowledge of GST/HST/QST/PST legislation and its application. Experience working within a large, complex organization supporting multiple legal entities is strongly preferred. Experience gained within a large corporation, Big 4/public accounting firm, financial institution, or real estate organization is considered a strong asset. Excellent analytical, communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills. University degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
