About the role

Join ITN Food Corporation as a Senior Accountant (Controller)

ITN Food Corporation, a leading food import and distribution company, is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant (Controller) to lead its accounting operations within a lean finance team.

This is a hands-on accounting leadership role, not an oversight-only position. The successful candidate will supervise AP and AR accounting resources while personally working on daily accounting activities, including reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close, financial reporting, ERP/accounting system work, customer/vendor account reviews, cash flow monitoring, credit management, and resolution of accounting discrepancies.

This is a full-time, fully in-person role based in Woodbridge (Vaughan), Ontario, reporting directly to the Director of Finance.

About ITN Food Corporation

For over 30 years, ITN Food Corporation has brought authentic South Asian food products and trusted brands to North American consumers. We import and distribute food products through retail and wholesale channels. Accounting at ITN is closely connected to operations, including customers, vendors, inventory, cash flow, credit, reporting, and business decision-making.

Roles & Responsibilities

Accounting Operations • Own daily accounting operations, including AP, AR, general ledger, bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and supporting schedules. • Supervise AP and AR accounting resources while remaining directly involved in daily accounting work. • Work directly in ERP/accounting systems to review transactions, prepare entries, complete reconciliations, identify discrepancies, and ensure accuracy. • Ensure transactions are properly recorded, supported, and completed on time. • Review and resolve unreconciled balances, aged items, customer discrepancies, vendor issues, payment concerns, posting errors, and related accounting matters. • Maintain financial controls, documentation, accounting discipline, and accuracy. Month-End, Year-End Close & Reporting • Lead and actively participate in monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes. • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, closing schedules, adjusting entries, working papers, and reporting packages. • Prepare and analyze financial statements and management reports, including income statement results, balance sheet accounts, variances, expense trends, and working capital movements. • Ensure month-end activities are completed accurately and on time. • Identify unusual balances, reporting discrepancies, financial risks, and areas requiring corrective action. • Provide senior management with financial analysis, variance explanations, and practical recommendations. • Maintain year-end working papers and documentation for external accountants, audits, reviews, and tax requirements.

AP, AR & Daily Accounting Supervision & Support • Oversee AP and AR processes while working directly with the team on execution and issue resolution. • Review supplier invoices, vendor reconciliations, payment schedules, customer receipts, credit notes, deductions, account adjustments, and outstanding matters. • Ensure timely follow-up on customer balances, vendor issues, payment concerns, missing documentation, and discrepancies. • Review AR aging, overdue balances, AP aging, vendor reconciliations, liabilities, and payment planning. • Step directly into accounting work where required to support timely completion and reporting accuracy. Credit, Cash Flow & Financial Analysis • Evaluate and recommend customer credit limits and payment terms. • Monitor customer credit exposure, overdue balances, collections, deductions, payment patterns, and account risks. • Work with sales and senior management to manage credit decisions while supporting business relationships and risk controls. • Monitor cash flow requirements, expected collections, scheduled payments, operational obligations, and near-term commitments. • Prepare or support cash flow projections, budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and management reporting. • Analyze gross margins, expenses, account movements, customer performance, working capital, receivable trends, payable trends, and other key indicators.

ERP, Excel & Process Improvement • Work directly within ERP/accounting systems to support transaction processing, reporting, reconciliations, data validation, and accounting control. • Use advanced Excel skills to prepare reconciliations, analyze financial data, review large accounting reports, identify discrepancies, and improve reporting schedules. • Identify weaknesses, inefficiencies, duplication, or control gaps in accounting workflows and implement practical improvements. • Improve month-end schedules, reconciliation templates, management reports, accounting documentation, and control procedures. • Support ERP, accounting system, reporting tool, or finance process improvements as required. Compliance, Audit & Tax • Ensure accounting records and processes comply with accounting principles, internal controls, company policies, and Canadian regulatory requirements. • Prepare and support HST remittances, year-end requirements, audit documentation, and other compliance activities. • Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, tax advisors, financial institutions, and other service providers as required. • Maintain audit-ready documentation and ensure records remain complete, accurate, and properly supported.

Team Leadership & Hands-On Accountability • Lead, supervise, guide, and review the work of AP and AR accounting resources. • Establish priorities, deadlines, controls, and accountability standards. • Remain personally involved in daily accounting work rather than operating only at a supervisory or review level. • Work alongside team members on reconciliations, close activities, account reviews, ERP tasks, issue resolution, reporting schedules, and related accounting matters. • Build a disciplined and reliable accounting function that supports a growing operational business.

Qualifications & Skills

Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field. • Minimum 7-9 years of progressive full-cycle accounting experience, including month-end close, reporting, reconciliations, journal entries, working papers, and accounting accuracy. • Minimum 2-3 years of experience supervising, leading, or guiding AP, AR, or accounting staff in a lean accounting team. • Strong hands-on experience performing and reviewing daily accounting work, not only oversight or delegation. • Experience with month-end close, reconciliations, adjusting entries, reporting, audit schedules, and issue resolution. • Strong ERP/accounting software experience, including transaction review, reconciliations, reports, data analysis, and process improvement. • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including data analysis, reconciliation schedules, large-data review, and financial reporting support. • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, internal controls, audit preparation, HST, customer/vendor accounting, and Canadian accounting practices. • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, communication, and follow-through skills. • Ability and willingness to work fully in person at the Woodbridge (Vaughan), Ontario location.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications • CPA designation, CPA candidate status, or equivalent senior-level practical accounting and controllership experience. • Prior experience as a Senior Accountant, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Controller, Finance Manager, or comparable hands-on accounting lead. • Experience in food distribution, import/distribution, wholesale, manufacturing, CPG, retail distribution, or another inventory-based business. • Experience with inventory accounting, landed costs, gross margin analysis, customer deductions, vendor reconciliations, credit exposure, collections, and working capital management. • Experience with ERP systems such as Spire, Microsoft Dynamics, SAP, NetSuite, Sage, QuickBooks Enterprise, or comparable systems. • Experience improving accounting processes, close procedures, controls, ERP workflows, reporting templates, or financial documentation. • Experience supporting external accountants, year-end reporting, audits, tax compliance, or financial review requirements.

Candidate Profile The successful candidate will be a senior accounting professional who combines technical accounting knowledge with practical execution and team leadership. This role is suited for someone comfortable leading a small AP and AR accounting team while personally working on reconciliations, journal entries, financial reporting, month-end close, ERP tasks, customer/vendor issues, credit management, working capital monitoring, and process improvements. This role is not suited for someone seeking only high-level supervision, delegation, or review.
