Voluntary Finance and Investment Committee Members (Non-Executive)

Canadian Science Publishing has vacancies on its Finance and Investment Committee (“FIC”) and is seeking two exceptional individuals with strong financial expertise and an interest in scholarly publishing to fill these important volunteer roles. What is Canadian Science Publishing? Canadian Science Publishing (CSP) is Canada’s largest publisher of international scientific journals. As an independent, not-for-profit leader in research publishing, our portfolio of 26 journals spans the natural and physical sciences and engineering. CSP’s vision is advancing science the world can trust. Our mission is to enhance the reach, rigour, and relevance of science so that people can find, trust, and use it. https://cdnsciencepub.com/ Where are we heading? The scholarly publishing industry is undergoing an exciting period of transformation as it shifts from subscription-based models to sustainable and equitable open access models. Global research communities need access to scientific literature to advance knowledge. As a mission-driven organization, CSP is dedicated to meeting the needs of researchers. The next few years will be transformational for CSP. We have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in scientific publishing in Canada and beyond. https://cdnsciencepub.com/about/strategic-plan Who are the CSP Finance and Investment Committee members? The committee is currently composed of five voting members, including up to three members of the CSP Board of Directors, and is supported by CSP’s CEO, Chief of Business Operations, and Corporate Secretary. Committee members review financial information, including financial statements and investment performance, and make recommendations to CSP’s Board of Directors on budgets, the annual audit, financial risk, asset allocation, and policy changes. One of the new FIC members may also be invited to join CSP’s Board, with a term of three years commencing at the Annual General Meeting in 2027. The CSP Board is composed of 11 directors (https://cdnsciencepub.com/about/leadership) and is responsible for CSP’s governance. Working with the CEO and CSP’s three-member Senior Management Team, the Board helps ensure that strategic priorities are set and achieved, that the organization remains financially healthy, and fulfill its fiduciary duties to CSP. Board members also help build connections with stakeholders in research publishing in Canada and beyond, acting as ambassadors for the organization. We are committed to fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive culture in science publishing that welcomes everyone and engages in continuous reflection and improvement to fulfill this commitment. Who are our ideal new Finance and Investment Committee members? We are seeking FIC members with financial expertise and knowledge of: Interpreting financial information, including income statements, balance sheets, auditor reports, and investment reports Canadian not-for-profit financial regulatory and compliance requirements Risk management, including reviewing insurance coverage The ideal candidate will bring a strong interest in innovative scholarly publishing and experience as a CFO or finance executive, with an audit or other financial reporting background. A CPA designation is preferred but not essential. An understanding of the needs and priorities of scientific research communities in Canada and internationally would be an asset. This person will be a strategic thinker who is committed to CSP’s mission and mandate. We particularly welcome candidates with experience advising on sustainable revenue models and identifying new funding opportunities. The ideal candidate will also bring knowledge and experience in some of the following areas: Governance of not-for-profit organizations and board experience Financial oversight and fiduciary responsibility Advising boards or senior leadership on financial matters Science policy, or research funding in Canada and/or internationally Additional skills and experience that would be considered assets include: Francophone science Use of AI in research and/or research publishing Securing open access funding What is the expected time commitment? FIC members participate in one in-person meeting per year, with expenses covered, and two virtual meetings per year. Each meeting is approximately three hours long and typically begins at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Members generally spend two to four hours reviewing materials in advance of each meeting and may contribute additional time, depending on their expertise and availability, to help advance CSP’s strategic objectives. The Board normally meets the following day with a similar time commitment. How do I apply?
