About the role
Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant is responsible for overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, funding compliance, budgeting support, and financial analysis. This role plays a critical part in maintaining the financial health of the organization by ensuring accurate reporting, supporting strategic decision-making, and promoting strong financial controls and accountability.
The Senior Accountant will work closely with department leaders and program managers while providing guidance and support to finance team members. The successful candidate will contribute to organizational effectiveness through sound financial management, continuous process improvement, and compliance with funding and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities Financial Management & Reporting Oversee daily accounting and financial operations. Ensure accurate and timely completion of month-end and year-end financial processes. Prepare monthly financial statements, variance analyses, and management reports. Assist in the development, monitoring, and forecasting of annual operating and capital budgets. Monitor cash flow and support financial planning activities. Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and financial reporting systems. Prepare financial information and analysis to support leadership decision-making. Funding & Compliance Manage financial reporting requirements for multiple government-funded and community-funded programs. Monitor funding allocations, expenditures, and reporting obligations. Ensure compliance with funding agreements and reporting deadlines. Support program managers in budget monitoring and expenditure management. Prepare audit schedules and coordinate annual external audits. Respond to auditor and funder requests as required. Leadership & Collaboration Provide guidance and support to members of the finance team. Foster a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented work environment. Assist with staff training, development, and workload coordination. Promote effective communication and teamwork across departments. Partner with managers and department leaders to provide financial guidance and support. Systems & Process Improvement Support the continuous improvement of financial systems, processes, and internal controls. Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reporting accuracy, and financial accountability. Assist with the harmonization and optimization of financial processes across the organization. Support the implementation and enhancement of financial technologies and reporting tools. Organizational Support Participate in organizational planning and operational initiatives. Contribute to the organization's long-term sustainability through sound financial management practices. Support special projects and strategic initiatives as required. Act on behalf of the Director of Finance when delegated.
Qualifications Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. CPA designation (completed or in progress) is strongly preferred. Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including financial reporting and budgeting responsibilities. Experience working with government-funded programs, grants, or not-for-profit organizations is considered a strong asset. Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial/accounting software. Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Strong communication and interpersonal abilities with the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organization.
