Manager, Investment Oversight & Research

LAPP1 day ago
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Senior Level
Full-Time

About the role

For more than six decades, the Local Authorities Pension Plan has quietly stood behind the retirement security of over 320,000 Albertans the municipal workers, healthcare staff, teachers, and public servants who keep local communities running. Today LAPP oversees roughly $79+ billion in assets, making it one of Canada's largest defined benefit pension plans and the single largest client of the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). That scale, and the responsibility that comes with it, has created the opportunity to grow the Investment Oversight & Research function.

This newly created role sits at the centre of one of the most important partnerships in Canadian pension governance LAPP’s relationship with AIMCo, its investment manager. You will assess portfolio performance, risk, and investment strategy across public and private markets, build the scorecards and analytical tools that give the Board clear visibility into how the Plan's money is being managed, and provide the thoughtful, independent analysis that supports LAPP's fiduciary duty to its members. You'll help shape the Statement of Investment Policies and Procedures and work alongside other Alberta pension plans as they collectively help inform investment policy across the province. Your work will reach the Corporate Board directly, and through it, the retirement outcomes of hundreds of thousands of people.

This is a role for someone who has spent ten or more years in institutional portfolio management, investment research, or consulting, who has deep due diligence experience in at least two major asset classes, and who understands not just capital markets but the particular discipline of pension governance. It calls for technical rigour paired with real judgment: the ability to build trust with senior leadership, external managers, and peer institutions, and the discretion to know what belongs in a boardroom and what doesn't. You'll join a small, tightly collaborative team at a moment when LAPP's oversight capability is being deliberately and visibly strengthened, working alongside the Executive Director of Investment Oversight & Research on the analysis that shapes how a major Canadian pension plan safeguards its members' futures.

You'll do this work from Edmonton, a capital city that has quietly become one of Canada's most liveable the most affordable major city in the country, home to a booming tech and clean energy economy, eight post-secondary institutions, and a festival calendar so packed it's earned the nickname Canada's Festival City. Low taxes, low cost of living, and a genuinely high quality of life make it an easy place to put down roots while doing work that matters at a national scale.
