Director of Finance
Thrive Housing and Support is seeking an exceptional Director of Financial Operations and Reporting to join our Senior Leadership Team. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this role provides strategic leadership for the organization's financial operations while helping shape the future direction of a growing and increasingly complex organization.
We are looking for an experienced professional with a strong foundation in accounting and financial leadership. Beyond technical expertise, we're seeking someone who values collaboration, builds strong relationships, and takes the time to understand how our programs and services operate. The successful candidate will navigate complexity and provide practical financial advice that is rooted in sound accounting principles and supports effective organizational decision-making. They will also be passionate about developing the Finance team by mentoring staff, building confidence and expertise, and creating an environment where people are empowered to succeed and thrive. As a collaborative non-profit organization, we value leaders who lead by example- rolling up their sleeves to support the team and contribute directly when needed while maintaining a strategic leadership perspective.
Position Summary
The Director oversees all financial operations of the organization, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and long-term financial sustainability. The position provides leadership to the Finance Department and serves as a trusted advisor to the CEO, Board of Directors, Audit and Finance Committee, and Senior Leadership Team. Thrive operates within a diverse and complex financial environment. Approximately 80% of organizational funding is provided through Ontario Health, requiring compliance with provincial funding agreements, reporting requirements, and accounting processes using Great Plains. In addition, Thrive owns and operates three social housing properties, provides property management services for three additional properties, administers a rent supplement program, and manages multiple funding streams, legislative requirements, and capital projects. Success in this role requires someone who can understand how these different business lines intersect and ensure the organization's financial processes support each of them effectively. The Director works closely with leaders across the organization to understand operations, identify financial implications, improve financial processes, and provide recommendations that support both operational needs and responsible financial stewardship.
Strategic Financial Leadership Lead the organization's budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and reporting processes. Provide strategic financial leadership that supports long-term organizational sustainability and informed decision-making. Prepare financial analysis and recommendations for the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, Board of Directors, and Audit and Finance Committee. Monitor organizational financial performance, identify emerging risks and opportunities, and recommend practical solutions. Lead operating and capital budget development across the organization. Ensure compliance with funding agreements, accounting standards, legislation, and reporting requirements. Oversee the annual audit process and coordinate with external auditors. Maintain effective financial controls, policies, and procedures.
Leadership and Organizational Collaboration
Develop strong working relationships with leaders across Housing, Client Services, Human Resources, Corporate Services, and Administration. Develop an understanding of departmental operations to ensure financial processes accurately support operational requirements. Work collaboratively to strengthen budgeting, forecasting, accountability, and financial decision-making. Identify opportunities to improve financial systems, reporting processes, and organizational efficiency. Lead initiatives that simplify workflows, strengthen internal controls, and improve financial processes. Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring, and performance management to the Finance team. Empower and develop two Finance staff by teaching financial processes, building technical knowledge and confidence, encouraging professional growth, and supporting them to succeed in their roles. Foster a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented team culture.
Qualifications
Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field. CPA designation preferred but not required. Demonstrated senior leadership experience in accounting and finance, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audit coordination, and financial stewardship. Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial statement preparation, internal controls, and applicable accounting standards, including not-for-profit accounting standards. Experience working with multiple funding sources, complex financial environments, or publicly funded organizations is considered an asset. Experience working in a non-profit organization funded through Ontario Health is an asset. Experience working in a non-profit organization that has RGI or affordable housing in its portfolio is an asset, especially social housing governed by the Housing Services Act and/or rent supplements Experience leading and developing staff in a collaborative team environment. Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and relationship-building skills. Commitment to continuous improvement and improving financial processes and systems.
Experience with: Microsoft 365 Great Plains Financial and payroll systems HRIS systems Yardi Voyager AlayaCare Database and reporting systems Business intelligence and reporting tools Process improvement, workflow redesign, and technology implementation projects
Compensation
Annual salary: $93,496 to $113,620 Hourly equivalent: $47.95 to $58.27
