About the role
Responsibilities
- Assist with month-end closing by preparing reconciliations and ensuring completeness of general ledger accounts, and posting of journal entries, adjusting entries or accruals as needed.
- Perform account analysis and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts to ensure accuracy via preparation of correcting journal entries as necessary.
- Perform bank reconciliations to General Ledger, investigate and resolve discrepancies and assist with cash management activities as required
- Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules.
- Prepare and submit HST, sales tax returns and other regulatory tax filings.
- Analyze PST exempt and discount transactions, and identify and follow up discrepancies with Director of Retail Sales and Operations.
- Assist by providing financial analyses, preparing schedules and researching responses to queries as required for external audits, internal audits and government audits as they arise
- Process accounts payable invoices and credit card expenses, including coding, matching and payment of vendors.
- Review and verify invoices, purchase orders, and expense reports for accuracy and compliance with company policies.
- Provide outstanding service to internal departments, stores and Company employees with a sense of urgency and responsiveness and a high level of attention to detail in investigating and replying to information requests
- Recommend improvements to Finance practices and systems to improve efficiency and productivity
- Participate in special projects and ad hoc duties as required.
Position Requirements
- 2+ years proven experience in a similar accounting role working in a small-to-medium size entrepreneurial business focusing on account reconciliations, general ledger accuracy, and full cycle accounts payable processing.
- Equivalent of post-secondary diploma or degree in accounting, business or finance-oriented field of study with a knowledge of accrual accounting, general accounting and financial analysis
- Proficient computer skills with excellent knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and V-lookups; knowledge of macros is an asset
- Fluent English written and verbal communication skills essential
- Quick learner with ability to solve problems, use critical thinking and apply sound judgment in resolving problems and escalating to senior management when necessary
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team player with Finance, management and retail staff
- High degree of discretion and confidentiality with mature judgment and integrity critical in safeguarding sensitive information
- Demonstrated high degree of work organization and attention to detail
- Self-motivated with strong initiative and ability to work independently or as a team player
- Demonstrates a sense of ownership and responsibility in task completion and follow up of commitments
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, transition between tasks and flexible to adapt quickly to changing priorities while working under pressure and within time constraints to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Hard working, positive, can-do attitude with ability to accept and learn from feedback
- Excellent attendance and punctuality with a strong work ethic, conscientiousness, and reliability
- Ability to follow directions and comply with work instructions and health and safety standards to maintain a safe work environment.
- Previous retail experience is an asset
