At Loonio, we're building the infrastructure that moves money in real time. We power fast, secure payment processing built around Interac e-Transfer, and in payments there is zero tolerance for slow, unreliable, or almost-right. The scale is real, and everything you ship is felt the moment it goes live. We're looking for an Engineering Lead to own a meaningful piece of it.
The shape of the role is roughly 60% building and 40% leading. You'll write, review, and ship code every week, and you'll be the person your team of about six engineers looks to for direction, growth, and unblocking. This is not a meetings-all-day management job. It's a builder's leadership role, and we mean it.
What you'll own You'll design and build backend services in Java and Spring Boot, and you'll own the architecture as we decompose our monolith into microservices. You'll decide where the next service boundaries go, build the REST APIs and integrations that connect our systems, and make the calls on transactions, concurrency, caching, and performance. You'll drive quality through testing, code review, and refactoring, and you'll help shape our AWS infrastructure alongside our solutions architect. On the leadership side, you'll mentor and grow your engineers, run 1:1s that actually move people forward, and own delivery end to end. You'll sit in product design sessions with our PM and CTO, where we want a lot more than "yes, that's feasible." We want your opinions, and we want you to push back when something doesn't make sense.
You're who we're looking for if You have 8+ years building software, with real depth in Java (8/11/17+) and Spring Boot. You've genuinely led a team: hiring, mentoring, running 1:1s, owning delivery. Not the senior person on the team, but the leader of it. You know microservices from the inside, including decomposition strategies, service boundaries, inter-service communication, and the tradeoffs that come with all of it. You write testable code by habit (JUnit, Mockito), and you understand JVM internals, OOP, SOLID, and design patterns without having to look them up. You're fluent with relational databases (SQL, transactions, JPA/Hibernate), Git, code review culture, and CI/CD. You've made real AWS architecture decisions across EC2, ECS/EKS, RDS, SQS/SNS, S3, IAM, and CloudWatch. You can hold your own in product conversations and translate cleanly between business needs and technical reality.
Bonus Points: Terraform and Infrastructure as Code, Redis caching strategies (TTL, invalidation), observability through structured logging, metrics, and distributed tracing, deep Spring AOP and proxy knowledge, AWS certifications, or experience with Angular and TypeScript. Payments, fintech, or fraud experience is a real plus.
