About the role

Manager, Audit and Systems 

As WorkplaceNL’s Manager, Audit and Systems you will be responsible for Assessment Services audit program, leading a team that ensures employers are complying with the registration, reporting and payment requirements of the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Act, 2022 (the Act) and that all audit functions are effective, efficient and achieving the mandate of WorkplaceNL. The Manager is responsible for the ongoing operation, development, support and enhancement of all modules of the Assessment System and online services for employers and the secure administration of the Assessment System. 

 

Role Responsibilities                                                                     

  • Oversees and directs the day-to-day administration of all activities of the audit area including supervision and direction of employees and assignment of work. 

 

  • Developing and monitoring a comprehensive annual audit program with a formalized, targeted audit component.

 

  • Monitoring the annual audit program to ensure it is administered consistently, accurately and fairly to all employers.

 

  • Establishing annual work plans, goals and objectives, as well as providing on-the-job training and development for all auditors.

 

  • Ensures employees are current and up to date on relevant matters of policy and legislation. 

 

  • Monitors and reviews the performance of audit area staff and provides ongoing feedback, while completing annual performance reviews.

 

  • Ensures employers operating in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador are aware of, and in compliance with, all aspects of assessment reporting and registration requirements of the Act.

 

  • Reviews audits conducted by the auditors and adjustments to financial or demographic employer data, before it is applied to an employer’s account to ensure the integrity of the employer database. 

 

  • Approves auditor expense claims and leave.

     

  • Consults with, and provides direction to, auditors on contentious issues and problems (regarding coverage, employer reporting requirements, assessable remunerations and accounting principles and practices) 

 

  • Oversees responses to employer inquiries or their authorized representatives, in relation to audit results and decisions.

 

  • Evaluates workflow and finds solutions to improve internal processes and services to employers.

 

  • Develops written policies, procedures and operational guidelines to ensure consistency in auditing throughout the province as well as ensuring consistency in the daily decision making in the audit division.

 

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Commerce Degree, supplemented by a professional accounting designation. 

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a computerized financial accounting or an auditing environment as well as five years of progressive management experience.     

  • Formal training and experience in systems design, development and implementation as well as a demonstrated ability to use various personal and mainframe computer systems and applications.         

  • Experience and training in supervising and motivating employees to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives. 

  • Demonstrated oral communication skills (including presentation skills), interpersonal skills, and well-established written communication skills.

  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving abilities, investigative and research abilities, in addition to a strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

  • Experience planning and managing projects, including information technology projects.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Act/Regulations, policies and procedures, and ability to understand the concepts and principles of workers’ compensation and how they apply in varying situations. A keen interest in and knowledge of the provincial economic climate and the industries operating in this province would be an asset.
