Job Profile
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Claims, the Claims Adjuster I will work independently on routine recovery claims and oversee all recoverable costs of damages from external parties. The Claims Adjuster I is also required to handle a variety of routine low to medium complexity claims files and that involve investigating, obtaining and reporting all facts required in the determination of legal liability of claims made by or against the City of Winnipeg. These facts must be recorded in a detailed, concise and factual manner in preparation of a decision, potential litigation, or negotiation and settlement.
The Claims Adjuster I will deal with matters that are of a highly sensitive and confidential nature. A general understanding of Tort Law, and various Regulations and Acts is expected.
As The Claims Adjuster I, Your Duties Will Include
Investigate claims on behalf of City of Winnipeg for damage caused to City property and vehicles, in order to collect on all recoverable costs from the liable external parties. Investigate and settle claims brought against the City of Winnipeg for property and vehicle damage. Determine and set accurate settlement and expense reserves. Provide coaching, mentoring, and feedback to junior staff. Perform other duties consistent with the classification as required.
Your Education And Qualifications Include
Post-secondary education in Business, Office Administration and/or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Actively pursuing a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation with the Insurance Institute of Canada's Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) Program with the successful completion of two (2) Insurance Institute of Canada Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) course. One (1) year of Claims experience working within a Claims Department including but not limited to, experience in adjusting property and liability insurance claims, proper investigation techniques, independent negotiation, and settlement of claims. Experience conducting effective investigations, negotiations and applying principles, practices, and techniques used in investigating and adjudicating a variety of liability, property, and auto claims Effective written communication skills with the ability to prepare thorough and concise reports and to compose emails. Strong verbal communication skills with ability to interview a variety of people in order to obtain and clarify information, respond to public inquiries, and handle volatile situations. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to deal effectively with various levels of personnel from both private and public sectors including incensed individuals. Proficient with computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, Teams) Observational and analytical skills, with the ability to evaluate responses and information received in order to ensure completeness of investigation. Knowledge, or the ability to acquire a thorough knowledge in a short period, of relevant Acts, By-laws and Statutes, and their application to the claims adjusting function. Ability to work under minimum supervision, work effectively under pressure, meet deadlines, set priorities and make independent decisions. Ability to provide coaching and feedback to junior staff. Ability to maintain confidentiality with respect to dealing with sensitive information IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada.
