About the role
We are initiating a search for an Accounting Manager to join a commercial refrigeration and HVAC business in Scarborough, Ontario. This role ensures accurate financial statements, strong internal controls, job costing discipline, and timely reporting to support operational and strategic decision-making. The Accounting Manager will manage the accounting team and work closely with operations, service managers, and ownership. Financial Management & Reporting Ensure all bank transactions are recorded and reconciled on a daily basis Ensure all completed jobs are invoiced upon completion; ensure HST returns are calculated, filed, and paid by the end of the following month Monitor Accounts Receivable regularly and own timely AR collection Ensure all supplier invoices are properly recorded to an expense or work order and that suppliers are paid on time; ensure parts are charged directly to a work order or to inventory, and that parts taken from inventory are charged to the correct work order Ensure weekly payroll is properly recorded in the accounts and that labor cost is charged to work orders at the correct absorption rate; ensure union payments are calculated and paid by the 15th of the following month Prepare a monthly list of prepaid expenses and accrued liabilities that ties to the GL Prepare a monthly list of all jobs/work orders not completed by month end, with all costs properly recorded Ensure all revenue is properly classified as Service, Project, or Maintenance, with associated costs reflected in the same categories in Cost of Sales Ensure the technician utilization report is prepared every Monday for the prior week Own and execute a 5-business-day monthly close, ensuring accuracy and consistency Oversee profitability reporting by service line (service, maintenance, construction) Ensure accurate labor costing, technician productivity reporting, and overhead allocation Establish and enforce internal financial policies and controls Own sales tax compliance and reporting, including preparing and filing returns on time Liaise with auditors on audits and compliance matters Lead and mentor the finance team, ensuring efficiency and professional development Qualifications & Skills Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; Master's degree a plus 6+ years of experience in financial management, accounting, or auditing Proficiency in MS Office, ERP systems, and financial software (e.g., Sage, COINS) Experience in a service-based HVAC or construction industry preferred Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills Experience with a unionized workforce a benefit Knowledge of QuickBooks important High attention to detail, problem-solving mindset, and ability to work under pressure #LI-LL1
