Job details
Location: Remote within Canada Pay: $24-33 CAD per hour, based on experience Starting workload: 20-35 hours per week Job type: Full-time employee or contractor Preferred start date: October 15, 2026 About the Opportunity You keep a client’s books accurate, deadlines on track, and questions answered quickly. You take ownership of your work, follow through on commitments, and communicate before someone needs to check in. That’s the kind of Senior Bookkeeper we’re looking for at Back Office Stars. We’re a Canadian, cloud-based bookkeeping firm looking for an experienced Senior Bookkeeper to join our supportive team in a full-time, remote role. You’ll take over an established portfolio of at least 10 monthly clients, with bookkeeping and reconciliations that are mostly current. You’ll lead client communication from the beginning, working alongside Dayna, our Team Lead, as you learn our clients and processes. This is a general bookkeeping role supporting a variety of businesses and organizations. Construction or nonprofit bookkeeping experience would be a strong asset, but neither is required. What You’ll Do Own your monthly client portfolio. Complete full-cycle bookkeeping, month-end procedures, and bank, credit card, loan, payroll, clearing, prepaid, accounts receivable, and accounts payable reconciliations. Manage day-to-day bookkeeping needs. Handle invoicing, bill payments, accounts payable and receivable, Canadian payroll, and GST/HST and applicable provincial sales tax filings. Review and resolve issues. Investigate unusual balances and discrepancies, check your work, prepare financial reports, and support year-end preparation and accountant questions. Keep clients informed. Lead client conversations, request missing information, respond promptly, and follow up until outstanding items are resolved. Keep work moving independently. Maintain deadlines, notes, and time records in Financial Cents. Flag obstacles early and bring forward a clear next step rather than waiting for reminders. What You’ll Bring 5+ years of full-cycle, cloud-based bookkeeping experience, including at least 2 years in a bookkeeping or accounting firm managing multiple client files. 5+ years of QuickBooks Online experience and QBO ProAdvisor certification. Hands-on experience with Dext, preparing GST/HST returns, and managing payroll, supported by strong knowledge of Canadian sales tax and payroll requirements. Confidence completing balance sheet reconciliations, reviewing financial reports, and investigating discrepancies. Clear, professional written and verbal English communication, including the ability to lead client meetings and explain bookkeeping questions. A dependable system for managing recurring deadlines, outstanding requests, and competing client priorities. Experience with construction or nonprofit organizations, Xero Advisor certification, a CPB designation, formal bookkeeping education, or experience working closely with a CPA would be valuable assets. What We Offer Guaranteed 20 hours per week from the start, with the option to increase up to 40 hours per week over time. 20 hours of paid onboarding, including reviewing inherited files, team meetings, and training on BOS workflows. Two weeks of paid vacation and five paid sick days annually, or greater entitlements where required by applicable provincial standards. Reimbursement of eligible mobile phone and internet expenses up to $150 per month. An established monthly client portfolio, a collaborative remote team, and ongoing support from our Team Lead and experienced bookkeepers. Our work focuses on year-round bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax, reporting, and client support. We do not prepare personal or corporate income tax returns. Schedule and Remote Work Our core business hours are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Eastern Time, with flexibility for team members in other Canadian time zones to work within an 8 a.m.–4 p.m. window in their local time zone. Your guaranteed 30 working hours per week will generally be scheduled within your agreed weekday availability. However, occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet client deadlines. This is a client-facing daytime role, not an evenings-and-weekends-only position. You’ll need a reliable computer, internet connection, and a secure, private workspace. Applicants must be physically based in Canada and legally entitled to work in Canada. Our Technology We work with QuickBooks Online, Xero, Dext, Plooto, Wagepoint, Financial Cents, Google Workspace, ChatGPT and Loom. Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills and confidence learning new cloud applications are also valuable. How to Apply Please apply via LinkedIn. Shortlisted candidates will have at least two interviews: the first with Dayna, our Team Lead, and the second with Jonathan, our owner. You may be asked to complete a case study. We’re looking forward to meeting someone who brings strong bookkeeping skills, thoughtful client communication, and dependable follow-through to our team.
