Bishop's University is seeking an Accountant to fill a regular full-time position in the Financial Services team. Reporting to the Manager of Financial Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the accounting cycle of all funds of the University for the internal and external financial statements.  The accountant is also responsible for all government reporting including reports required by the various research agencies. This position has a work week of 35 hours from Monday to Friday.   

Nature of duties and responsibilities

  • Prepare the monthly financial reports for the operating fund;
  • Participate in the year-end activities for the preparation of the external financial statements including the audit for the three funds (operating fund, restricted fund and capital fund);
  • Prepare journal entries, account analyses and reconciliations with required supporting evidence both for the regular accounting cycle and for fiscal year-end purposes, for the three funds;
  • Be responsible for the financial reporting of the capital projects and the restricted funds;
  • Review current accounting processes, make recommendations and implement changes to streamline operations;
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget;
  • Be responsible for the preparation of financial reports for governments including reports for research agencies;
  • Coordinate the work of students working in the Financial Services Department;
  • Work with other departments to ensure that all government reporting is consistent and accurate with the University’s records, and provide support where required;
  • Assist in the implementation of internal controls and support the Manager of Financial Services in special projects including the evolution of the financial system;
  • Perform various administrative and financial tasks for the Bishop’s University Foundation, including the preparation of the financial statements;
  • Perform other duties as assigned and make recommendations as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • University degree in business/commerce with a specialization in accounting ;
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in general accounting and financial statement preparation ;
  • Very good knowledge of computerized general ledger systems and Microsoft Excel ;
  • Very good knowledge of external audit processes ;
  • Excellent teamwork and ability to work under pressure ;
  • Ability to adapt to a changing work environment ;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English and French.
  • Accounting designation would be an asset ;

 Classification: Class 14    $31.99 to $41.76   per hour     ( unionized position)
