We currently have a fantastic opportunity for a Financial Controller to join our growing team in Toronto.

The mission of the Controller is to coordinate and oversee all daily accounting processes for Modern Niagara Toronto to ensure they are carried out efficiently, effectively, and within established timelines. The position is also responsible for the monthly financial reporting of the SBU's Major Projects, Special Projects, and Electrical operating units. The Controller must work with both their Finance teammates, as well as with Operations staff, to ensure that the highest level of service is provided to projects, external clients, and vendors.

Reporting to the VP Finance - Construction, the Controller must also live and promote Modern Niagara's Core Values in all their actions and support the efforts of the entire Modern Niagara team towards achievement of established financial and business Key Performance Indicators ('KPIs'). The incumbent will have the opportunity to develop professionally and advance his/her Finance career upward within Modern Niagara through a combination of both education and a breadth of professional experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage the full-cycle accounting process and provide leadership to our area Finance, A/R and A/P teams, promoting adherence to Modern Niagara's core values
  • Prepare monthly financial reporting package for Modern Niagara Toronto. Identify and implement opportunities to streamline the financial reporting package or add reports that will help the Executive Team achieve the Company's financial goals more effectively
  • Prepare monthly forecasted financial statements by working with our Finance and Operation Managers
  • Provide monthly and quarterly financial variance analysis to our various Stakeholders
  • Monitor Work-in-Process ("WIP") reports and work with the Director of Finance and Operations Managers to ensure billing targets are met or exceeded
  • Manage Toronto regions 5-year financial plan
  • Manage financial reporting for the Toronto sheet metal and plumbing shop.
  • Promote and support communication between our financial team and Project Managers to ensure contract and invoicing issues are identified and resolved in a timely manner
  • Work with Project Managers and Project Coordinators to ensure billing breakdowns are established for each contract in a manner to provide maximum financing advantage
  • Monitor Accounts Receivable aging reports on a regular basis and coordinate collection efforts with both Collections and Project Management personnel to ensure cash collection KPIs are met or exceeded
  • Promote and support communication between Finance and Project Managers to ensure contract and invoicing issues are identified and resolved in a timely manner
  • Maintain and monitor Company's cash forecasts on a daily basis, ensuring cash resources are optimized
  • Review and approve cheque runs, ensure payments are accurate and managed to optimize Company cash flow and maximize cash discounts
  • Mentor team members and provide guidance to ensure processes are conducted with optimum effectiveness and efficiency
  • Support the Accounts Payable team and work with vendors directly to resolve invoicing and payment expectation issues.
  • Monitor company CAPEX additions to ensure purchases are within budgeted targets
  • Provide guidance, and company positions, to finance team\operations regarding the appropriate accounting treatment for certain transactions
  • Evaluate internal controls and identify areas for improvement
  • Seek efficiencies in financial transaction processing and reporting
  • Coordinate responses to external auditor inquiries
  • Complete special projects & analysis on an ad-hoc basis, as assigned

Qualifications and Job Requirements:

  • Professional accounting designation required (CPA)
  • Minimum of 5 years of financial management or Controllership experience
  • Experience in the construction industry a definite asset
  • Ability and willingness to lead people - People leadership and management experience will be a definite asset
