Your job:

We are looking for a dynamic individual to join the National Commercial Lines team. As a Manager, Commercial Lines, supporting our Lloyd’s Underwriting and Risk-Can departments, you will be responsible for motivating a high-performance team, leading by example, and enhancing and developing relationships. You will maintain a strong customer focused approach and commitment to the success of the team and our organization. You will work closely with our Risk-Can Underwriting Managers (MGA) team to build a successful book of business.

  • Proven track record: 5+ years of management experience leading high performing teams.
  • Sales driven mindset and self-starter: We have ambitious growth targets – you are able to find opportunities to grow better and faster without a pre-determined road map to follow.
  • Relationship builder: Cultivating relationships excites you.
  • Technical underwriting ability: 5+ years commercial underwriting experience. Exposure to developing niche products or growing program business an asset.
  • A team player and natural leader: You thrive in a face-paced collaborative team environment and are passionate about developing and empowering your team to achieve their full potential and perform at a high level.
  • Comfortable with change: Building a leading MGA will require pivoting on strategies and initiatives. You are okay with priority shifts as we grow together.

What you will do:

  • Contribute to the success of our business by participating in regional business plan objectives and by committing to individual and team objectives.
  • Manage the various portfolios to achieve profitability and growth through risk selection, pricing and retention as governed by the parameters outlined in our Binding Authority Agreements.
  • Determine goals and objectives for direct reports; assign responsibilities; provide guidance and feedback regarding performance; facilitate continuous learning, career development, and succession planning.
  • Provide effective leadership by continuously keeping your team informed on changes/results and share accountability for the overall performance, productivity and engagement with team members.
  • Develop and nurture respectful and successful working relationships with our BrokerLink Brokers through strong communication, visibility and participation in achieving results.
  • Recommend and develop products to aid in growth targets. Ad hoc project work as required.
  • Improve workflows to aid in department efficiencies

Skills and Experience:

  • A university graduate or have the equivalent business experience
  • Have completed your CIP and/or FCIP
  • Possess sound knowledge of Commercial Underwriting and/or five years of Commercial Lines risk assessment and experience in a management or senior technical capacity.
  • A natural leader with a proven knack for leading, influencing and motivating a team and for facilitating change.
  • Invested in and have a proven history of driving strong employee and team engagement contributing to the success of your department
  • Keenly interested in and stay up-to-date on competitive practices, business trends, or other developments impacting on business results and are able to recommend change when needed.
  • Able to maintain professional and effective business and personal relationships by promoting mutual understanding of expectations, issues and trust.
  • A strong communicator who is able to articulate effectively with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Accounting experience an asset (accounts receivables and bank reconciliation)

  • Ability to travel
  • Located in Toronto, Sudbury, Edmonton or Calgary
  • Alberta Level 2 General Insurance License an asset or willingness to obtain
  • RIBO license an asset or willingness to obtain
