Job Summary
To manage British Columbia Kidney Research Unit (BCKRU)'s operating and research financial activities mainly held at the Providence Health Care Research Institute (PHCRI), University of British Columbia and other affiliated institutions. The unit consists of research scientists, faculty members and trainees and staff and research personnel.

In conjunction with the Finance Manager of Providence Health Care Research Institute, manages project grants, research accounts and contracts by overseeing all expenditures, transferring of funds as necessary, evaluating financial priorities, overseeing the maintenance of internal records, and reconciling the financial services ledger sheets including resolving any discrepancies

Reports to Directors of BCKRU


Work Performed
• Performs core accounting functions, budget planning and forecasting.
• Interprets and monitors financial policies and procedures established at PHCRI, UBC, other affiliated institutions and the granting agencies that affect the use of grant funds, and ensures compliance with Revenue Canada and PHCRI/University's regulations.
• Responsible for budget preparation for providing orientation and training investigators and staff with regards to financial administration of grants and contracts.
• Manages deficits that may result from research operations. This would include proactively avoiding deficits and should they occur assists with mitigation strategies.
• Responsible for preparing regular timely reports for the director and principal Investigator pertaining to financial activities, actual vs. budgeted reports, etc. using UBC Workday and/or PHC, PHCRI systems Responsible for preparing financial reports for the Directors.
• Ensuring that expenditures comply with granting agencies policies and terms of conditions
• Responsible for keeping individual PI's up to date on their financial status assisting PIs with budget forecasting and management.
• Preparing financial and budgetary reports for the Finance Manager.
• Analyzing financial statements and reconciliation of UBC, PHC, PHCRI and Foundation accounts.
• Participating in evaluating and making recommendations for cost reductions with the unit.
• Responsible for remaining conversant with new accounting procedures and legislation and reporting any new procedures to the Senior Manager .
• Managing the overall receiving and processing of invoices and cheques.
• Opening and closing of new accounts as required .
• Responsible for maintaining all financial records Preparing the financial information needed for completion of grant applications.
• To develop efficient methods and procedures.
• To provide support to PHCRI finance team as needed.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
The impact if errors are very high and could seriously jeopardize the loss of grant awards if policies and procedures are not followed. Shortage of Budget forecast could result in the loss of personnel, equipment and laboratory supplies.

Supervision Received
Works independently with minimal supervision direction and reports directly to the Providence Research Finance Manager and the Directors of BCKRU.

The incumbent will act as office supervisor in training and mentoring supporting staff(s)

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Completion of at least 7 of the 14 CPA academic prerequisites. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
