At SMS Equipment, our Payroll Accountant is responsible for the delivery of payroll remittances, journals entries and account reconciliations by providing accounting expertise, excellent customer service, as well as acting as a resource for the Staff & Hourly Payroll coordinators and Analysts. This position is in Acheson, AB.

This position offers a hybrid work arrangement. This is a temporary position for a term of 18 months.

The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $65,000.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure appropriate accounts and logs are maintained to support Payroll and Finance department.
  • Ability to calculate and upload all journal entries.
  • Ability to calculate payroll liabilities, employee federal and provincial income taxes, employment insurance, federal pension plan and worker's compensation deductions, NWT Tax deductions.
  • Verify the accuracy of the payroll data against the completion of journal entries before entering into eXtend.
  • Maintain the Journal Entry log.
  • Verify the accuracy of the payroll data from the eXtend ERP system.
  • Process all applicable garnishments, retirement contributions, source deductions, and union dues.
  • Complete GL Reconciliations as needed.
  • Align the Source Deductions filing against the remittances.
  • Ensure that all payroll items are posted to the correct accounts.
  • Interact with Accounting department on any discrepancies in journal entries or accounts.
  • Act as a source of information for accounts and journal entries.
  • Demonstrate compliance with department standards and policies including those for safety, health and the environment.
  • Maintain a positive, respectful and professional environment for department members.

      Qualifications:

      The successful candidate will have a post secondary education and/or formal training in Accounting paired with a minimum of 2 years of progressive accounting experience in a similar role. Additional requirements include:

      • Strong analytical skills to reconcile complex accounting concerns.
      • Knowledge of integrated financial information systems.
      • Good oral and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
      • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite i.e. Excel
      • Ability to work in a demanding environment with strict deadlines and tight schedules.
